3 Essential Tools for Adjusters

October 17, 2022

July 15, 2020

Do you have the “right” tools to get claims done quickly and efficiently? With so many tools out there, we believe there are some that are non-negotiable.

Smartphone

This one rises above any other tool out there because of its multi-functional capabilities: it’s essential you have a reliable and up-to-date smartphone. This will enable you to communicate on the go, schedule appointments with policyholders, keep track of schedules, make notes, take photos and video, video conference, perform virtual inspections, internet search, measure, and much more when you include apps. It is well worth it to get a good smartphone as well as a good phone case to protect it.

Transportation

Second, make sure you have reliable transportation in good condition. Adjusters who are not performing 100% virtual inspections must be able to physically visit and inspect the damaged property and should look professional while they’re at it. Without a reliable vehicle, you risk being late to appointments. Taking an Uber to Pembina, North Dakota on Christmas Eve is not always an option.

Laptop (and Estimating Software)

A laptop and computer estimating software rank highly as essential for adjusters to have. It goes without saying that you need a computer if you are going to write a computer-generated estimate using estimating software like Xactimate, SIMSOL, or Symbility. A laptop offers so many additional features as well—photo resizing programs, programs to write your reports, access to the internet, and other uses. A laptop is invaluable in much the same way as a smartphone: it can be taken anywhere!

Bonus Tools

  1. A ladder, ladder locks, and safety extensions
  2. A laser tape
  3. Cougar Paws roof climbing shoes
  4. Rope & harness
  5. Wheel tape for when you have a large commercial building to measure
  6. Camera (in case your phone runs out of storage or loses battery)
  7. Measuring tape
  8. Hand sanitizer and other PPE are not only great tools but are now required during an inspection in many states
  9. Water, caffeine, and Advil are pretty handy ”tools” as well!

To wrap up, don’t skimp on your tools. We highly recommend that you consider all of the above tools and do your own research as well. Talk to other adjusters. Find out what they use to make the job quicker, easier, and more efficient. You can also find a full list of gear recommended by veteran adjusters on AdjusterTV.com. Make sure you’re prepared with the right tools.
